FAQ
Frequently asked
Do I need a Citegrove account?
Not to use this. The optional email capture unlocks a weekly digest of subreddits to watch in your category.
How do you decide whether self-promo is allowed?
We pull the subreddit's rules from Reddit's public API and look for both explicit allow phrases ("self-promotion is allowed") and explicit ban phrases ("no self-promotion", "no advertising", "no shilling"). When neither matches we report "unclear" — read the rules yourself.
How accurate is the karma requirement?
We extract numbers from rules text, e.g. "100 karma" or "50 comment karma". This catches most cases but not all — read the actual rules below the verdict to verify.
Why does it say "unclear" for some subreddits?
Some subreddits don't mention self-promotion in their published rules at all. Default to assuming it's frowned upon unless mods say otherwise.
What's the difference between this and r/subredditname rules?
None — we're just reading the same rules and surfacing the relevant signals. The value is speed: check 20 subreddits in the time it takes to manually click through one.
Do you store the subreddit names I look up?
No. We log a hashed IP for rate limiting (10 lookups per IP per 24 hours) but not the names you check.
I want to do this for 100 subreddits at once.
That's what Citegrove is for — paste your domain and we automatically pull every relevant subreddit, score each thread, and surface the actionable ones every week.
